Crazy Pattern, Pieced Quilt

Made by Jessie Landis
Cotton with silk, corduroy, fur, satin and velvet
c. 1885
58” x 58”
1991 Gala Fund Purchase
91.1

The crazy quilt swept the nation in the last quarter the 19th century. The embroidered green “L” in the center stands for Landis. There is a white ribbon in this quilt that refers to the martyred President James Garfield. Death-related textiles in a variety of media were not uncommon during the period.
